Deborah Feldman was raised in the Hasidic community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She has always felt like an outsider due to her father being mentally ill and her mother leaving her behind. At the age of 19, she marries another Hasidic Jew yet knows that she no longer wants to remain in the community. After gaining the strength, she takes her son and moves away from her family to begin her life elsewhere
When I began to read this book I believed that I would have nothing but compassion for this woman but this was not the case. While I can understand why she felt like an outsider, she seemed to relish the feeling of it. I was glad to finally see her understand herself enough to know that she did not belong in the world in which she was born and find the strength in herself to start over and make a better life for herself.
