Yamilet Flores is transferring to a Catholic school to keep her brother out of trouble…and to hide the fact that she is gay. As Yami begins to make friends she develops a crush on the beautiful Bo, the openly queer girl in her friend group. While fake-dating her closeted brother's boyfriend to seem straight, she realizes that her feelings for Bo are a bit more than a crush. After an emergency with her brother, Yami comes out and prays that her mother won't kick her out.
This is a well-told story of coming of age and coming out. Anyone who has had to come out to their loved ones knows how hard it is and how real the fear of rejection is. Reyes allows the reader to feel the worry of being outed and the gay panic of falling in love with a pretty girl. The narrator does a wonderful job of properly portraying and emoting for each character and what they are going through. This was an enjoyable and emotional story that I was glad I took the time to read.
