Rowan has had a very trying year - she gave birth to a daughter named Quinn and suffered from some postpartum issues and then the sudden death of her father. Hoping a change of scenery will help her cope, she and her family move to Helme House to help with a restoration project. Almost immediately, strange things start to happen such as phantom smells and black shadows begin to haunt her. As she researches the history of the house and the former owner that went missing. She discovers that the house harbors many secrets and she won't stop until she discovers them.
I picked up this book because I was in the mood for a creepy ghost story and this one fit the bill. It had the perfect atmosphere of a normal appearing house, mysterious events surrounding the house, and a main character who is directly affected. At the beginning of the story, the author states that she uses the mysterious disappearance of Joan Risch , who disappeared and left a kitchen covered in blood behind as an influence, outside of the odd mention of blood appearing in the house, I did not see the influence anywhere. That being said, I enjoyed this book and will read others by this author.
