Hannah Martel thinks she has escaped occupied Europe only to have her boat refused by Cuba & the United States. When she discovers their first stop heading back to Germany will be Brussels she sends a telegram to a cousin she hopes will help her. Realizing that she must get out of Europe as soon as possible, she beings looking for a member of the Resistance for help when she discovers the Sapphire Line. As the group looks for ways to help her, they begin to use her to pass messages and the like. Hannah's work with the Sapphire Line puts her family in danger. When her cousin and her family are arrested, she must find a way to save them as they are on their way to Auschwitz.

I loved this book. It was such a well-told story that had me captivated from the first page to the last. Hannah is a character the reader immediately cares for when they discover why she needs to leave Europe and what she has lived through. Per usual, Pam Jenoff has done extensive research into the internment camps, the trains to Auschwitz, and the movements of the Comet Line - which was the inspiration for the story. I could not read this novel fast enough and is a perfect example of why I love historical fiction and why Pam Jenoff will always be an auto-buy author for me.
