I have been a Mariah Carey fan since I first heard "Vision of Love" so I was very excited to finally get my hands on her memoir. I have always been in awe of her songs and the meaning behind her lyrics and she goes into detail about where those meanings come from. Mariah details her rough and often unsafe upbringing and the lengths she went to in order to become who she is. She explains her difficult familial relationships and how she learned to overcome them.
The hardest part of this book to read was her time with Tommy Mottola. While most people understood that the marriage was not the fairy tale Mottola tried to portray, what was not known until this book was how hard it was on Carey. She equates the marriage to being held in prison...she even called their shared home Sing Sing after the infamous prison. Reading the torment Mariah went through at the hands of Mottola broke my heart.
Reading about the ups and downs of Mariah Carey's life gave me a greater insight into her lyrics and the emotion you hear behind them. I now enjoy listening to her music even more knowing the stories and emotions behind them.
