Alice Roosevelt's popularity among the American people surpasses even that of her father, President Theodore Roosevelt. The more outlandish her behavior the more times she appeared in the newspaper the more beloved she was. Alice's life is full of love, learning, and pain. She becomes the wife of the Speaker of the House, the mistress of a member of Congress, the mother to a daughter who discovers the truth, and the grandmother who saves her granddaughter after a tragedy. At the end of her life, Alice was many things but the most important was memorable.
Alice Roosevelt, as told through the words of the author, was a pip (to use my Grandma's term)! She lived life how she wanted to and loved her family to the fullest. Thornton tells a wonderful story that encompasses all aspects of Alice's life - the good, the bad, and the ugly. There were moments in the story when I felt the writing lagged a bit but not enough to where I felt the need to stop reading. I look forward to reading more by this author and learning more about the lives of women who refuse to disappear into the background.
